Parenting Styles

As I get closer to my due date, you’d think that I would start to get worried about the birth. What I have in fact found is that I am actually more stressed about the type of parent I am going to be and how my child will turn out.

In this thinking I decided to read a book that went into an interesting parenting style.

The book is titled Battle hymn of the tiger mother, written by Amy Chua.

This was such an interesting read. Coming from an asian background, my Filipino parents were quite strict and wanted to bring me up in the traditional Filipino way. This proved to be quite a challenge as I grew up in areas where it was predominately Australians.
There were definitely parts of this book that I could relate to, but what I found more interesting was the motivations that are behind this particular strict parenting style.

While I definitely think that I will raise my child differently, I think what I took out of this book that I found great, is that these tiger mothers push their children so much because they know they are capable of greatness. They have a belief in their children even if their children may not have that confidence in themselves.

Very interesting read, and an insight into a culture that is not only viewed as different to westernised countries, but also considered very extreme. Either way, no matter how you raise your children, or what your views are on raising children, this book is a good time filler and has some great tips if you want to raise a prodigy piano playing child. hehe.

It also goes to show that no matter how hard or strict some parents are on their children, whether we see parenting styles are too extreme, at the end of the day it seems parents only want the best of what the world has to offer their children.
